When Gladys moved into a senior community in Lakeland just over a year ago, she never imagined that a simple conversation group would spark a new chapter in her life.
In April, Gladys became one of the first participants in The Tree House Foundation's inaugural Café y Conversación, a virtual English conversation group led by our ESOL Instructor, Ms. Anie Perez. While Gladys could already communicate in conversational English, she shared that she often felt nervous speaking with others. She worried about making mistakes and lacked confidence in how she sounded.

From the very first session, Anie created a welcoming, judgment-free space where participants could practice English, ask questions, and simply enjoy conversation together. It didn't take long for Gladys to begin feeling more comfortable.
At the end of their first class, Anie gave Gladys a small challenge: strike up a conversation with a neighbor she often saw sitting alone in the building.
The following week, Gladys returned with a smile and exciting news. She had introduced herself to her neighbor, and what started as a homework assignment had grown into a genuine friendship. More importantly, she realized she was capable of communicating more confidently than she had believed.
Although Gladys was not officially registered for the following month's sessions, she continued joining Café y Conversación every Thursday throughout May because she loved having a safe place to practice and connect with others.
As her confidence grew, so did her goals.
During an intake conversation with our team, Gladys shared that she had seen The Tree House Foundation's flyer about ESOL scholarships available through Traviss Technical College. For the first time, she felt ready to pursue formal English language classes.
With support from The Tree House Foundation, Gladys completed her application and is now waiting for placement testing so she can enroll in an ESOL course this fall that matches her current language proficiency.
Gladys' journey is a beautiful reminder that meaningful change often begins with something small. A weekly conversation group became more than an opportunity to practice English. It reduced social isolation, built confidence, created a new friendship, and inspired one resident to pursue continuing education.
At The Tree House Foundation, we believe every conversation has the power to change a life. By creating welcoming spaces where residents feel safe, supported, and encouraged, we help individuals discover the confidence to take the next step toward their goals.
Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation.
